What would you say to everyone on your last Sermon Sunday? If you had one more message to give to your family? Your loved ones? What would it be? The last word Jesus gave to His disciples before he left the planet were in paraphrase: ‘Don’t worry about time charts and dates… God’s got that. Just remember that power is yours when my Spirit will come upon you and you will be my witnesses all over the world!’  Do you think they believed Him? Not immediately. Jesus also told his disciples that He would be with them ‘even to the very end of the age.’

The Equipped Christian

If we took a basic survey among Christians to determine the greatest danger facing the Church in 2018 is, what do you think it would be? Some might point to intolerance of traditional Christian values, others might point out social injustices the Church should be more active in opposing, while still others can highlight the ways hypocrisy among Christian leaders has eroded people’s trust in the Church. Another challenge lies not outside, but inside the church: 75% of Americans consider themselves Christians, and yet the majority of them hold to unbiblical and unChristian beliefs about who God is, what it means to be a Christian, and whether or not faith in Jesus is necessary for salvation.

What must it have been like for those ‘wise men’ to approach the habitation of the baby boy Jesus as the Bethlehem Star hovered overhead? They knew Herod was king of the region and he wasn’t pleased with this visit all though he said otherwise. One ‘born king of the Jews?’ We have seen his star and have come to worship Him.’

The Coming of the Shepherd

12/17/17 - The Coming of the Shepherd - Matthew 2:1-6

What do you think of when you hear the word ‘shepherd’? A crook? Smelly animals? Wool? Long cold nights under the stars? Shepherd is a common term in the Bible and the expression of sheep and shepherds is used as an illustration often. Many of us do not come from a farming background and we have little knowledge of sheep. In the Middle East, in the time of Jesus and OT Israel, it was like our common knowledge of computers, cell phones and the internet today.

Your Immanence – Reflections on God With Us

Eminence, imminence and immanence. Each sounds the same yet each is vastly different. When we walk into the advent season each of the above words are true of our Lord Jesus. He iseminentor preeminent, illustrious, renowned. Jesus’ return isimminentor near, fast approaching and Jesus being fully God is alsoimmanent. He pervades and permeates and sustains all of creation. He sees our every step, knows our every thought and every word before it is on our tongue. He controls the times and weather and nations are a drop in bucket. For all time and all people He is over all. He iseminent and immanent and His return in imminent.

What is Christmas all about? Is it about presents under the tree? Or spending time with family? Or about the “magic” of the season? Biblically speaking, Christmas is about none of those things - it’s about the coming of the savior who redeemed sinners and secured the restoration of all things by the grace of God. Christmas is about the coming of the Savior.
