A Noble Task

 03/23/2014  A Noble Task: 1 Timothy 3:1-7 ; Pastor John C. Ames

leadershipJohn Maxwell once said, “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” Another influencer once said, “Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.” (Jack Welch) Jesus said, “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave; just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Leadership is about influence. Leadership is all about serving. God has ordained leaders to oversee His local church. They are also referred to as elders. (Acts 20:17,28 ) Because of this high calling, there are high qualifications. The list in the first letter to Timothy chapter three is all about men with proven character and skill. Elders have godly character and the ability to teach the Word of God for today.

But in order to lead in God’s house, overseers and pastors must stay out of the devil’s traps. Spiritual arrows of temptation and deception come at leadership all the time. That’s why an elder must not be a recent convert. He must have a good reputation among those outside the church. He is accountable in his high calling but needs grace as well. Elders must be on guard and watch over the flock. Here are some things that help us process this:

  1. Leadership – Keep your guard up. (James 1:14,16 ) If not, you will surely get hit.
  2. All – Pray, Pray, Pray… Prayer is one of our greatest protectors and greatest weapons. (Matt. 26:41 )
  3. Develop and discover your gifts. Leadership may be ‘in you’.
  4. Don’t take the bait! Don’t smell the bait. Don’t go near the bait. When the enemy dangles the bait, don’t get caught in his trap. (See I Timothy 3:7/I Peter 5:8)( I Thess. 5:22).
