01/03/2010 Beginnings - Whatever Happened to Biblical Worship?: Matthew 4:8-11
When the term "worship" is used today, many things come to mind. The word has to do with that which is "Worthy" that which has "WORTH". We value many things in life, but we don't, or at least shouldn't, worship them. Jesus, after his baptism, was taken by the Spirit of God... led into the wilderness for a time of testing and trial. 40 days - 40 nights brought him to a point where he was severely famished and hungry. Satan was allowed to tempt him; and yes, he really was tempted! (Without Sin; see Heb. 4:15). The first temptation of the flesh, turning stones to bread: Jesus knew and declared that man doesn't live by (physical) bread alone. He had other nourishment of a spiritual nature that was more important.
The second temptation was one of power and pride... to throw himself down from the pinnacle of the temple. Once again, the Word of God was in his heart and mind and on his lips. Foolish testing of the Heavenly Father was not to be engaged in. Thirdly, Jesus is taken to an exceedingly high mountain and shown glimpses and snapshots of all the kingdoms of the world. Satan felt that he now had him. "Become ruler of this world! I'll give it to you if you but only fall down and worship me." Yes, this too was a real temptation from the ‘god' of this world... (See 2 Cor. 4:4). Jesus, who was with the heavenly Father from before time was created, had an immediate response. Worship is for GOD ALONE. NO OTHER... Upon the command of Jesus, Satan was ordered to flee and had no choice. He was gone. Will your year begin with worship and devotion to God alone? Or will it be mixed and filled with many other ‘gods' that will never nourish your soul? (Matt. 16:26). Give God first place when you evaluate your time usage this year. Make Him the object of your adoration and learning in public and private. You will never be the same. The diamond mine awaits you.
