Christ and Culture - Was Jesus a Politician?

09/27/2009  Christ and Culture - Was Jesus a Politician?:  Luke 4:17-21

politics"Some say a politician who spoke of being free. He was followed by the masses on the shores of Galilee. He spoke out against corruption and bowed to no decree. But they feared his strength and power, so they nailed him to the tree." So sang Larry Norman back in 1972 (the Outlaw) in the era of the Jesus Revolution. Jesus was much more than a politician. His message was one of freedom and yes he did speak out against corruption. He challenged the political powers of this world but his kingdom is not of this world.

As Christ's followers representing Him in this world, we should however not be indifferent in our culture... Jesus wasn't. Learning about our legislative process; becoming aware and informed on issues; voting; running for office, standing up for righteousness and supporting those who do - is not "politicizing" the gospel. It is becoming obedient to the mandates of the gospel. Solomon said under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, "Righteousness exalts a nation; sin is a disgrace to any people. (Proverbs 14:34). The more we reflect righteousness the more our nation will be honored by God.

What are we actually saying by our lives if we let our culture be influenced and even controlled by those who stand against Christ and His Church when we have every opportunity to do the same? We are ambassadors for Christ in this world.
