Scripture: Deuteronomy 6:4-9 (NLT)

“Listen, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

What's the Plan

How often have you thought, “Today I will do this and tomorrow I will do that.” Or, “This time next year I will have liked to have accomplished this.”

We all make plans and some of us have a bucket list. There is nothing wrong with making plans. We all want to be responsible. However, when our plans trump Gods plans that’s when we get into trouble. Some of us hold onto our agendas so tightly that when the Spirit of God does want to break in we are either so tuned out to His whisper or we deny Him flat out. James strongly encourages us that the brevity of my life demands humility.  If one pauses for a moment in our lightening fast culture and really reflects on our human condition we all know that we are fragile and there is so much our of our control. Yet we prop our selves and our hopes up often with godless arrogance. We all need to be humble before our Creator because there are limitations on our lives (James 4:12-13 ). We are a mist, a vapor that quickly vanishes, that’s the reality of our condition – by design.

Treasure hunters roam the beach in the early morning hours searching for bits of precious metal with their metal detectors. They meticulously listen with headphones and pass the detector over the sand in a methodical, thorough manner. Solomon the wise once said regarding wisdom; “if you seek for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom, and from his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.” (Proverbs 2:4-6 )

I have always been amazed at circus acts when the Lions and Tigers come out and display amazing self-control with their trainers’ commands. We can’t imagine how much time and effort has gone into the training and the tactics. Training techniques have changed over the years for the better. But the danger is always there!
