The first part of Hebrews 12:1 refers to the heroes of the faith in chapter 11. Just to pick one example, we could talk about Moses, who “refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter; choosing rather to endure ill-treatment with the people of God, than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin.” Moses’ faith prompted him to take action. They were men and women like us, who disobeyed God sometimes, but who in the main exercised faith, and deliberately chose to stay on a trajectory of faith. People like Sarah, and Noah, and Rahab, and Abraham…they’re cheering us on in the race.

What does your faith in Jesus Christ really cost you? Apart from a few hours on Sundays or a few hours volunteering during the week, what has been the cost for the Lordship of Jesus Christ in your day-to-day operations? In our text this week Paul continues to orient his readers as to great worth as well as challenge to being called a disciple. Later in Ephesians chapter four to six Paul will give some very clear instruction as to how his theology practically works out but for now,  Jesus calls us to be prisoners, servants and sufferers for the unity found in the gospel.

What do you think of when you hear the phrase; ‘dwelling place of God’?  Angels? Clouds? Glorious Splendor and Brilliant light? Many of us consider the dwelling place of God to be heaven. In Old Testament times, the dwelling place of God was considered to be the Tabernacle and later the Temple. But God’s permanent residence is in another dimension.

The Gift of Grace

10/1/17 The Gift of Grace - Ephesians 2:1-10

John Newton was a scoundrel. He was a well-known slave trader whose life was so marked by sin that he shocked even fellow slave traders. During a raging storm in 1748 he clung to the helm of his ship, took stock of his life, and surrendered his life to Christ. Eventually he repented of his despicable profession and devoted himself to become a minister, never forgetting the amazing grace he had received. While many do not recognize his name, they know his famous song, “Amazing Grace.” The message is true, “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.” God’s grace changes men like John Newton, and it continues to change lives today.
