The priests of the temple had one job… to lead the people into faithful worship of the Living God. On one hand, they were diligent about the rituals and sacrifices; but on the other hand, they literally rejected God-in-flesh and allowed the section for Gentiles to be turned into a marketplace. The Temple was meant to be an intersection between heaven and earth, where people could come and encounter the LORD. Instead it turned into an exclusive center for Jewish patriotism. Jesus was not impressed.

In 2000 Mel Gibson stared in a movie entitled “the Patriot”. His character was Benjamin Martin, a devoted family man, widower, left with six kids. He was a decorated war hero who left the military and the movie introduces us to Benjamin and his reluctance to get involved as the British are taking over our country. Benjamin Martin is now a peaceful farmer who is driven to lead the Colonial Militia during the American Revolution when a sadistic British officer murders his son.

It would be wonderful for all God’s children to get along. Among others who talk about Jesus and who teach Scripture, we are called to practice discernment. 1 John 4:1 warns us about false prophets and false teachers who twist and distort the Word of God. Not all who talk about Jesus or who quote Scripture should be trusted. Instead, we are called to practice discernment, especially regarding those who loosen central doctrines and lighten the Christian’s calling in our world.
