Loving Sonship

3/11/18 - Loving Sonship - 1 John 4:1-21

It would be wonderful for all God’s children to get along. Among others who talk about Jesus and who teach Scripture, we are called to practice discernment. 1 John 4:1 warns us about false prophets and false teachers who twist and distort the Word of God. Not all who talk about Jesus or who quote Scripture should be trusted. Instead, we are called to practice discernment, especially regarding those who loosen central doctrines and lighten the Christian’s calling in our world.

Here is something many of us have discovered: throughout our twenties and early thirties, we one day wake up to discover, “I’ve become my father/mother!” The message of 1 John 2:28-3:24 is this: God’s children look like their Father. This section begins with a big picture reminder of Jesus’ return as motivation to welcome him with confidence as children rather than being among those who shrink in shame because of our faithlessness. In the end, all people will receive Jesus in one of these two ways. We are children of God or we are children of the devil.

The world likes to frame us as a people who are judgmental, spiteful or dogmatic. What if we were a peculiar people who could hold in balance truth and grace? John calls us to be a fellowship of love and Jesus commands us to love each other in such a way that the world will know that we belong to Him by how we love. Grace and truth are equally important to Him and His bride.Truthful Fellowship adores Jesus Christ, knows with confidence the anointing of the Spirit of God and abides in Him.Those who “went out” from the apostles, who denied the deity of Christ, showed themselves to be against the knowledge of what God had given and shown in Christ. John was eager to not be associated with them. He labeled them antichrists. The spirit of the world and the Devil has always been working to oppose the knowledge and work of God in the Son (2;18-19).  John, with clarity asserts to his readers that you know Him by the truth. (20-24). And as you abide in Him you will continue to know Him. We are commanded to live, abide, remain in Him. If we remain, live in the truth of Who the Son is and resist the lies of those against Christ, our fellowship would be with God the Father and the Son.

Could you imagine if Christians were known for the way they love others? Rather than the negative stereotypes about being hateful, judgmental, close-minded people, what if we became known for our love? There’s danger in posturing yourself to be seen as a loving-person, because then it could merely be a persona rather than a characteristic that is genuinely who you are. At the same time, I fear that we’ve become so concerned about being right that we’ve forgotten to be kind.
