Over the last few months we have been exploring the New Testament letter of First Peter. Our theme has been Our Living Hope. In the closing chapter Peter provides some parting words to the Church and gives clear instructions as to how the family of Christ is to live and love and serve in the context of a culture that is growing increasingly hostile towards her.

No one would ever deny that Jesus of Nazareth suffered. Historians agree. Biblical writers give us the details. He suffered mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. He went to the cross and died physically to be raised by His Heavenly Father on the third day. He was misunderstood and spit upon yet He spoke like no other human being. His miracles attested to his greatness yet, He did not draw attention to himself. It is no wonder that his followers are called to the same way of life… that of suffering.

Distracted Christians are not dangerous. They’re too busy with unimportant things to be doing what matters most. If we’re honest, don’t we all fit that description more often than we’d like to admit? Between our phones, email, social media, and busy schedules it’s become more and more challenging to actually give our time and attention to the things that matter most.

Suffering isn’t a matter of if, but when. We will suffer. It’s just a reality in this life. For the Christian, persecution is the same way. If Christ is the king of our heart, despite all the good we may contribute to the world, we will endure persecution (v.15). If the world hated Jesus but loves us, there’s a problem. If we are never persecuted then chances are, we are either isolating ourselves from the world (which isn’t good) or we are so much like the world that we aren’t different enough to warrant persecuting (this isn’t good either).
