Could you imagine if Christians were known for the way they love others? Rather than the negative stereotypes about being hateful, judgmental, close-minded people, what if we became known for our love? There’s danger in posturing yourself to be seen as a loving-person, because then it could merely be a persona rather than a characteristic that is genuinely who you are. At the same time, I fear that we’ve become so concerned about being right that we’ve forgotten to be kind.

Is it possible to be a Christian who walks in darkness? There are many who have grown up in the church (and some who even attend regularly!) whose lives do not reflect the light of God throughout the week. 1 John 1:5 is one of the most important verses in the entire book, “God is light, in him there is no darkness at all.” John continues by making it clear that Christians who walk in darkness and refuse to confess (and repent) of their sin are not Christians at all. If God is light but we walk in darkness then we have no fellowship with God and no fellowship with each other. Instead, when we walk in darkness but claim to have fellowship with God then “we lie and do not practice the truth” (v.6).

One Worship Service

One Worship Service at 10:45 AM - Updated Time

All of the elders would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! We trust that you had a wonderful holiday with friends and family and that you have high hopes for the New Year!

During this season of transition in Emmanuel, our decision to have one worship service was made with intent to bring people together and to lessen the burden of our Sunday morning volunteers. Instead, it seems that we miscalculated the effect of asking people to attend a worship service at 9am in the morning. Many of our seniors and some of our families with young children will have great difficulty attending a 9am service. So after more prayer and deliberation, we have decided to swap the order of the CE hour and the worship hour.

Starting on January 7th, we will simply drop the 8am service and will hold our CE hour at the normal 9:30am time and our regular worship service at 10:45am. It is also our intent to hold a short fellowship time before the CE hour at 9:15am as has been our practice.

Although this will also be an inconvenience for some, it seems that it will cause less of a disruption than our original plan. Please continue to pray for unity and understanding in the church body.

No matter how we order services or set times, by going to one service we are reducing options and therefore causing some disruption and inconvenience. We hope and pray that we can show grace to each other as we work through this process. May the glory of Christ be found in each of us as we work together seeking the Lord’s plan for His church in Norfolk. (Ephesians 5:19-21 )

Elwell, Tyndale’s Dictionary of the Bible states that fellowshipis Communion with God which results in common participation with other believers in the Spirit of God.

The Apostle John states,"That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life….We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.4We write this to make our joy complete." 1 John 1:1 –4 (NIV84)

Last year I Becky and went to some friends house for the Super Bowl. We were down at halftime and Becky and I thought about leaving. “Its over there is no way they are coming back.” But, we decided to stay with our friends and watch.
